PAIR CAUGHT THROUGH CCTV AND CIG PAPER

TWO men have been jailed for a combined total of 15 years over a string of burglaries across Nottinghamshire.

One was caught after DNA evidence was found on a cigarette wrapper at the scene of a burglary. The other man was caught after a CCTV appeal.

Michael Reavill, 34, and Jason Lane, 41, of Pelham Road, Nottingham, were found guilty of conspiring to commit burglary following a trial at Nottingham Crown Court.

The court heard that Reavill committed the burglaries between December 3, 2017, and January 26 this year.

After one raid, in Yew Tree Avenue, Carrington, Reavill used a stolen bank card to make a contactless payment at a store in Nottingham. He was later identified after Nottinghamshire Police issued a media appeal with CCTV images of the suspect.

The other burglaries were in Weardale Road, Sherwood; Worcester Road, Arnold, Sherbrooke Terrace, Nottingham; Watcombe Circus, Carrington; Devonshire Road, Nottingham; Lortas Road, Sherwood; and Chard Street, Old Basford.

In all cases, Reavill used stolen bank cards to make contactless payments at various stores. He was identified through CCTV footage. The court heard that Lane was with Reavill after the burglary in Weardale Road. He was also caught on CCTV entering stores with Reavill at the time stolen cards were used fraudulently. When police attended the scene of the burglary in Watcombe Circus, they found cigarette papers in the back garden.

Forensic examination found a match for Lane’s DNA and shortly afterwards, a number of items identified as being stolen in burglaries were seized from a room Lane was stay- ing in at a hostel. Detective Inspector Ed Cook said: “We’re pleased with the lengthy custodial sentences given to Reavill and Lane and hope they give some reassurance to victims that we take burglary offences seriously and will do all we can to see offenders brought to justice. “This was a complex investigation which involved some really good work from the investigation team. “Burglary is such an impactful and distressing crime for victims which is why we now have a two new dedicated teams committed to tackling and reducing burglary in the city and county. The presence of our burglary teams and the hard work of our officers is sending out the message that if you commit a burglary in our force area you won’t get away with it.”
