Work starts on £200k concrete skatepark
WORK has started on a new £200,000 skatepark in Lady Bay nearly two years after the site was targeted by arsonists and a giant Nazi swastika was daubed there.
The work started on the concrete development at The Hook, off Holme Road, yesterday.
Maverick Industries, a company based in Dorset, has designed the facility in conjunction with local skaters’ suggestions.
The design stage has taken “a couple of months”, company bosses said.
Russ Holbert, design consultant at the firm, explained local riders were consulted about what they wanted to see at the park.
“We have spent a lot of time with local riders, going through exactly what they would like to see in the space,” he said.
“We can work with them and understand what they are saying and translate, design and build a facility that makes sense to the riders.
“Essentially it’s about trying to incorporate the facilities they would like to see in the space and having a skatepark the local riders are happy with and something we can walk away feeling very pleased with what we have brought to the area.”
The revamped facility is expected to take several months to complete.
Rushcliffe Borough Council tweeted to say: “Work on The Hook’s new skatepark in Lady Bay is set to begin in conjunction with @Sport_ England and @maverickskate!
“From Monday, construction starts on site so wherever possible please avoid parking on the access road to the site off Holme Road.”
The previous skatepark at the site was targeted by arsonists and daubed with a giant Nazi swastika in 2017. The area was cordoned off following an inspection by Rushcliffe Borough Council.
Before the fire was started, damage had already been caused to the ramps, making the area unsafe. It is understood that wood formed part of the previous skatepark structure. The new concrete facility will be “less prone to fire and damage”.
