NOTTS County have confirmed Jamie Turley’s departure from Meadow Lane, after the defender could not agree terms on a contract extension.

Turley had arrived at the club in September as a free agent under previous boss Harry Kewell, along with left-back Cedric Evina.

But while Evina has extended his stay at Meadow Lane, a deal with Turley could not be agreed and the defender now becomes a free agent.

A statement from Notts read: “We can confirm that Jamie Turley has left us following the expiration of his contract.

“Unfortunately an agreement could not be reached to extend his stay and he departs with our best wishes.”

Turley made 19 appearances for Notts and was a favourite among some fans for his wholehearted and committed attitude.

The defender said he was grateful for the chance to play for the club and wished them success in their fight against the drop to the National League.

“Sadly we were unable to negotiate and reach an agreement on an extension,” he said on his Twitter account.

“Contrary to rumours, I’ve not agreed to go elsewhere, I’m currently a free agent.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the club, the coaching staff, backroom staff and especially the fans who welcomed me into a great city.

“Wishing Notts fans all the very best for the remaining 18 games.”

Turley’s departure is expected to give Notts some wriggle room in their attempt to strengthen the squad, as the club looks to make additions that can help save their Football League status.

Manager Neal Ardley has already signed defender Ben Barclay from Brighton & Hove Albion on a loan deal until the end of the season.

They have also signed Jim O’brien on a permanent deal, following his departure from Bradford City.

England under-20 goalkeeper Ryan Schofield arrived on loan on Thursday from Premier League Huddersfield Town.

More arrivals are expected, while the club is also braced for further departures after Terry Hawkridge left to join ambitious National League club Solihull Moors last week.

The next two weeks are going to be pivotal for boss Ardley, who is still keen to strengthen the spine of the team, which is six points adrift of safety at the bottom of League Two.
