WORK has begun at The Island Quarter site in Nottingham city centre.

As contractors arrived at the former Boots Island site, between London Road and Manvers Street, Richard Watson of development firm Conygar Nottingham, confirmed that the main construction operations are due to start in the middle of the month and preparation work was under way.

He said: “Sir Robert Mcalpine is progressing with the establishment of hoardings, site welfare and access routes for our team to allow the preparation of the site to take place ahead of the first phase of the development.”

The site was given planning approval by Nottingham City Council in September.

Richard added that Canal Turn, the long awaited first phase, “will create a leisure destination, a range of facilities and green public realm space for Nottingham city centre. “Sir Robert Mcalpine will work closely with Conygar, The Island Quarter project management team and all stakeholders to ensure that the impact of construction activity is minimised.”

The approved plans include a three-storey 2,000 sqm pavilion on the waterfront, including two restaurants, around 500 sqm of events space and a large rooftop terrace.

Plans also detail space for a bandstand and a substantial public area – all of which will open up the canal basin, enhancing one of Nottingham’s most under-utilised assets.

As part of the first phase, improvements will be made to the canal at the London Road end of the

site, as Conygar and its partners work with The Canal and Rivers Trust.

Conygar took on the 40-acre site in 2017 in a £13.5m deal.

Plans for the entire development include new homes, grade-a office space, creative spaces, a lifestyle hotel, PRS apartments and co-working space, shops, a ‘linear’ park, community and event space as well as student accommodation.
