Joy and chaos as snow falls
‘YELLOW’ WARNING REMAINS IN PLACE
THE car park of a popular beauty spot had to be closed after heavy snowfall in the area.
Sherwood Forest has had to temporarily shut its car park yesterday “to ensure the safety of staff and visitors.”
In a tweet, the Sherwood Forest team said: “Due to sudden heavy snowfall, the car park at Sherwood Forest is temporarily closed.
“As always, we’re urging everyone to stay local and close to home for their exercise. Thanks for bearing with us.”
Some areas of the county saw snowfall as temperatures continued to drop to 1C, which also caused disruption to public transport and road users.
Snowfall caused traffic problems across Nottinghamshire throughout Thursday, including on the M1, the A57 and the A616.
Several services operated by Nottingham City Transport were either diverted or unable to serve areas of the city with the company citing the weather conditions as the cause.
Nottinghamshire Police also issued a warning to drivers following a number of accidents, including two separate incidents of lorries jackknifing in the snow.
A police spokesperson said: “The road was closed between A60 Bishops Walk, Church Warsop and Cottage Lane at the Cuckney Cross roads junction due to a jackknifed lorry and hazardous road conditions due to the snow.
“We have also been informed of another jackknifed lorry on Netherfield Lane between Meden Vale and Budby.”
The spokesperson added: “The Nottinghamshire Police control room have taken a number of reports of road traffic incidents on some of the county’s major roads.
“Reports include on the A57 at East Markham, the A46 at Widmerpool and the A52 at Stapleford.”
Meanwhile, children from Holly Primary school, in Forest Town, Mansfield, wrapped up warm and headed outside to play in the snow.
Pupil Teddy Lord, age four, made a snow angel while Seb, also four, gathered enough of the white stuff to make a snowball bigger than his head.
One hardy runner was spotted pounding a snowy path along Wilford Bridge as the first flurry of snow arrived for residents in Nottingham city, Lady Bay, Upper Saxondale and Top Valley.
Meanwhile, Nottingham City Council confirmed in a tweet issued yesterday afternoon that its gritters would be out across the city last night as temperatures were expected to fall below 0C and more snow was being forecast.
A yellow “national severe” weather warning remains in place for snow and ice across parts of the country - with wintry showers also possible across the region today and tomorrow.
