Anger as rubbish is dumped next to war memorial
RUBBISH including furniture was left dumped near a Nottinghamshire war memorial.
The fly-tipping incident, on Mansfield Road, near the junction with Downing Street in Sutton-inashfield, was posted on Facebook by Ashfield District Council.
A picture showed a discarded sofa and trolley among items found near the war memorial yesterday.
Conservative MP for Ashfield, Lee Anderson, said it was “absolutely disgusting” adding that the perpetrators “should be thoroughly ashamed”.
“These poor residents have to
put up with this even though they are paying council tax,” he said.
Councillor Samantha Deakin, of the Ashfield Independents said: “With any amount of fly-tipping, we investigate and if we find who is responsible we will prosecute. I’m frustrated, annoyed.
“The majority who live here are respectful and then it is ruined by the few. I can’t believe people can do such a thing.”
Councillor Deakin said confirmation had come for five new members of community protection as well as more CCTV cameras to target issues of anti-social behaviour, including fly-tipping, in the area.
“Hopefully with more cameras we can bring more prosecutions,” she added. “It’s important to reiterate the message about making sure people have a license to get rid of rubbish. Also, none of our council services have stopped and bulky waste collections are still there.
“But I think those responsible do not think of anyone else but themselves and until you get tougher, people will just carry on. This also means our teams are taken off other important work.”
