ANOTHER BLOW FOR TOWN CENTRE STRIPPED OF CLOTHES SHOPS

A “FOR sale” sign has gone up outside New Look – one of Long Eaton’s last remaining High Street clothes shops.

With the future of Peacocks and Bonmarche uncertain after both entered administration last year, it means the only other places to buy clothes in the town now are Tesco and Asda.

Dorothy Perkins, which had a concession in Tesco, closed the shop in the town and Swann Menswear was turned into a food shop after it closed in 2019.

Residents are saddened by the latest blow to the town centre and many say they’re not fans of buying clothes online.

Rosalind Walker said: “I don’t see how one can buy clothes online without trying them on. Shopping is a national pastime, so why spoil that? It is called retail therapy. They have taken that away from us in Long Eaton.”

Diane Brown prefers to drive to Derby, Giltbrook Retail Park or Fosse Park.

“Years ago we had some one-off boutiques in Long Eaton which were great for more special clothes. Long Eaton town centre is just a mess. If you want to eat, drink and smoke all day, then there are plenty of shops to meet your needs. I only visit town to do my food shopping or visit Home Bargains or B&M.

“I have not resorted to internet shopping yet – this is the last thing I want to do – but it’s coming to that if folk don’t use the shops more. I hate to see our town in such a poor state.”

Victoria Harwood said: “I think it’s awful that all of these establishments are being forced to close due to what is currently happening. It isn’t just about the consumer losing out, it’s also all the staff that are losing their jobs. I personally will never purchase clothes online as I would rather see what I’m buying first.”

Lauren Jennings added: “The high street is dying, and it is sad that the shops are disappearing. I cannot bear to shop online for clothing. It’s pot luck in the hope they fit. The sizings in one shop are different to another. I like to try things on and get the feel for them, not have to buy things, wait five days for delivery to then return and wait up to 14 days for a refund.”

Steve Fulwood added: “All towns are dying because younger people just buy online. When they are gone they are gone.”

New Look was approached for comment.
