Two men dead after crash on the M1

TWO young men were killed in a crash on the M1 near north Nottingham­shire.

The motorway was closed between junctions 30 and 31, near Worksop, after the serious crash which happened at around 8pm on Easter Sunday.

A white Volkswagen Golf was driving along the northbound carriagewa­y when it is believed the driver lost control.

The vehicle left the road and crashed into the barrier and several trees before overturnin­g.

South Yorkshire Police said two men, age 20 and 22, were pronounced dead at the scene.

A spokespers­on said: “Our Serious Collisions Unit is appealing for witnesses and dash-cam footage after two men were killed in a collision on the M1 on Sunday evening. At 7.29pm, a white Volkswagen Golf was travelling northbound on the M1 between Junction 30 and 31.

“The driver of the Golf is believed to have lost control, causing the car to leave the carriagewa­y and collide with the barrier and several trees before coming to rest on its roof.

“Two men from Sheffield, aged 22 and 20, were sadly pronounced dead at the scene. No other vehicles are believed to have been involved.”

“Both families have now been informed and are being supported by trained officers.

“We are asking any witnesses to the collision, or anyone who witnessed the Golf prior, to get in touch. We are especially keen to hear from anyone with dash-cam footage which captured the Golf travelling along the M1 between 7pm and 7.29pm.
