Jobs hope for old fuel depot site
APPLICATION FOR USE AS ‘STORAGE AND DISTRIBUTION’
FRESH plans have been revealed for the old Total fuel distribution site in Colwick.
The Total Petroleum centre off Colwick Loop Road was once used to distribute fuel across the country, but a decommissioning process started in the summer of 2019.
Demolition work also took place as the area was marketed by property agency Savills.
Now, company EE Ventures Limited has applied to Gedling Borough Council to use the vacant site for “storage and distribution”.
Although no further information is available in the application, the site covers land off Road No.3 at the Colwick Industrial Estate.
It was reported in October 2019 that offers had been made for two five-and-a-half-acre plots at the site – one for a buyer to take over a freehold of land and another option to sublet a leasehold.
Further redevelopment is planned for the area, with work progressing on a long-awaited Sainsbury’s on land nearby.
Work on the new supermarket, which will include an Argos, is due to be completed by May.
Councillor Meredith Lawrence, deputy mayor of Gedling, who also represents Colwick for Labour on Gedling Borough Council, said: “Because it’s been empty for some time, I understand they had to go through the process of decontaminating the land.
“I am grateful that something is happening so that hopefully it can provide a bit of employment.
“Being on the Colwick Loop Road it’s in an ideal place.
“It’s right next door to the Sainsbury’s site and the last I heard is that they are hoping to open in August.
“It seems a short while, although there is some work taking place on the site.
“I am delighted work is progressing and looking forward to the amount of jobs that will be created.”
Councillor Nicki Brooks, who represents Carlton
East for Labour on Nottinghamshire County Council, said the applicant for the old Total fuel site owned
“all the land around this area, the industrial estate in Colwick”.
Describing the plan as a “good use of the land”, she said: “It’s bound to attract some sort of jobs – that has got to be good for the area.
“I welcome any investment in the area and anything that will lead to jobs for the local people.
“It would be much better to have something happen there than not.” Meanwhile, an Aldi supermarket is also proposed for the new Teal Park trade park under construction next to the vast Rivendell housing estate, on land between Netherfield and Stoke Bardolph, near the Victoria Retail Park. The housing development has been described as a “mini-city” by a council leader and more than 800 properties are expected to be built in total. The estate has been named Rivendell as a nod to the area’s link with The Lord Of The Rings author J.R.R. Tolkien.
