LENTON residents are worried students will remain in the area for the summer after a year of Covid restrictions.

Exams conclude this week with many students expected to pack their bags and move home for the rest of the summer.

But residents in the area have been informed that a large number intend to stay around and they are worried that things could get out of control.

Over the past few weeks, as exams concluded and the weather warmed up, residents noticed a rise in the number of house parties.

This included loud music being blasted from gardens throughout the day, with one party in Harlaxton Drive lasting until 5am before starting up again the next day.

They claim there have also been issues with drunk students in the middle of Derby Road in the path of oncoming traffic as well as vomiting in the street.

The big worry for residents is if the two universities are closed for the summer what types of measures can be taken.

This year has been particularly tough for residents living in Lenton, with some considering selling up and moving out due to the constant anti-social behaviour.

Kate Loewenthal, from the Lenton Drives and Neighbours Residents Association, told the Post: “The word on the streets is because they have had such a difficult year and there have been so many lockdowns a lot of students will stay here to the end of their housing contracts or go home and then come back.

“It will mean we won’t get a couple of months peace and quiet - it will be ongoing throughout the summer. It could go on all day because they are at home.”

Virginia Rochester, of Harrington Drive, is also worried that students could stay in the area until August.

She said: “My concern is if the students stay for the summer and the university is closed - will there be any response to these parties?

“(At the moment) if they are causing anti-social behaviour the universities will respond and discipline, but if the unis are shut down for the summer how is that going to happen.

“If they stay over the summer because they have not had their student experience what do they expect to be doing? That makes me uneasy.

“We have had lots of parties over the last few weeks with exams ending.”

The University of Nottingham said: “The university doesn’t close over the summer, all its services operate as normal and all the usual methods of reporting ASB that residents are already familiar with remain in place as they do at any other time of the year.

“As the end of term approaches, we are obviously communicating with our students to remind them to continue to be good neighbours over the summer months.”

Nottingham Trent University added: “The university doesn’t ‘close’ over the summer, on-campus services are operational throughout the whole year.

“We’ll also be staying in touch with local residents to help make sure they know how they can get in contact with us should they need, including an outof-hours phone number.

“Recently we’ve been responding to over 95 percent of incidents reported to us within 14 minutes of the call.”
