Residents facing ‘nightmare’ time during roadworks

DISRUPTION WILL LAST FOR 12 WEEKS

It’s going to be very difficult for me to get out of my driveway.

PEOPLE living near a stretch of the A52 which will be subject to roadworks for 12 weeks say it will be a “nightmare” for them.

The works started on Monday, at the Bingham Road junction in Radcliffe-on-trent.

Highways England is carrying out utility works at the site, ahead of proposed main highway works scheduled to take place at the junction.

Radcliffe residents have previously hit out at these works, labelling them “disgusting” and “unsafe”. The works involve widening the road from two lanes to three and banning left turns from the adjoining Carter Avenue.

One lane of the A52 will be closed as part of the work, with temporary traffic lights in place and Carter Avenue closed at the junction with the A52.

Josie Green, who has lived in Radcliffe-on-trent for more than 60 years, told the Post: “I don’t think doing all of these works is a good idea at all.

“I can’t understand why it is happening - probably because they are worrying about the traffic and not about the people.

“It’s going to be very difficult for me to get out of my driveway because of it.”

Meanwhile, Pauline Walles, who lives on the main road, said: “If the changes they want to make happen, happen, then the traffic will be a lot closer to me.

“I think I’m going to move because of it, honestly.

“I think the traffic could be even worse in a few years’ time because of all the new housing estates that are going up here and in places like Bingham.

“A lot of houses have two cars each now. One of the main reasons why I chose this house was because I have a driveway and a bit of a garden at the front and now I will be right next to the traffic when it goes to three lanes instead of two.

“What is the point of doing all of this? Also, if you put traffic lights right next to houses, you are going to get a build up of idling cars, so we’re going to have a lot of that to deal with.”

Another resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “I think it’s just the beginning I’m afraid.

“It’s a very busy road which is used by so many cars, so my worry is that traffic is going to be really backed up. It’s a road pretty much everyone here has to use if they’re coming in or out.

“If you live right next to it, it would be a nightmare.”

Highways England say they are carrying out the works during the day in order to “complete the work as quickly and safely as possible and to keep noise disturbance to a minimum”.

They say completing the work at night would lead to a longer completion time.

Highways England project manager, Kanishka Varoon, previously said in a statement: “We fully understand the concerns of residents and any changes will only be made after full and careful consideration. This review is part of an independent process which is still on-going at present. We remain committed to working with local communities and stakeholders as we progress our plans for this scheme.”

Highways England is planning to make a number of improvements along the A52, including at Gamston roundabout along with the Silverdale and Stragglethorpe junctions.
