SAM Slocombe has ended speculation over his future by committing to a new contract with Notts County.

The goalkeeper was attracting the interest of numerous clubs, with League Two Scunthorpe United said to be among the list of suitors.

But Slocombe has decided to stay at Meadow Lane, where he has become a pivotal figure since arriving on a free transfer from Bristol Rovers two seasons ago.

The 33-year-old is widely regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the National League and has solidified his position as the Magpies’ number one.

Head coach Ian Burchnall said: “Retaining Sam is a huge positive for us. Not only is he a tremendous goalkeeper but he’s a top professional who helps drive high standards every day.

“Everyone knows that we like to play out from the back and Sam’s distribution, composure and vast experience make him the perfect fit for us.

“He enjoys the way we play, too, and I think his decision to stay is a great reflection of the excitement players have for what we’re trying to build.

“It’s been a long, hard season for Sam and I’ve told him to rest up and get ready to play a crucial role once again for us next season.”

Slocombe’s decision to put pen to paper is a huge boost for the Magpies, who are aiming to plot a promotion push next season.

He made 39 appearances for the club last season and has helped the club to two consecutive play-off finishes.

But the Magpies fell short of a return to the EFL, having lost to Harrogate Town in the final at Wembley last season and to Torquay United in the semi-finals this year.

The former Scunthorpe goalkeeper is the second player to commit his future to the club in 24 hours after Michael Doyle was appointed assistant head coach on Monday.

Doyle has still retained his player registration, but primarily his role will be in the dugout.

Notts are now hopeful Connell Rawlinson will sign his contract this week, the defender having been offered fresh terms.

Tiernan Brooks, Adam Chicksen, Dion Kelly-evans and Jim O’brien have also been offered new deals.

However, midfielder Jake Reeves left the club after signing for League Two Stevenage. He exercised a clause in his contract that allowed him to return to the Football League if an offer came in and Notts were still in the National League.
