POLICE ORDER STUDENTS TO KEEP THE NOISE DOWN – OR FACE BEING ARRESTED – AFTER ENDLESS PARTIES CAUSE MISERY FOR RESIDENTS

A DISPERSAL order has been put in place across Lenton after several reports of loud, all-night student parties this week.

Nottinghamshire Police’s neighbourhood inspector has called for people to respect their neighbours as residents say the problem has become “significantly worse” over the past few days due to students celebrating the end of their year.

One resident has even said that the problem has become so bad he “can’t take it any more” and plans to leave the area.

The order gives officers and PCSOS the power to force people to leave the area if they are being disruptive, and those who continue to cause problems will be arrested.

A 28-year-old resident, who didn’t want to be named, said: “I am moving out because of the noise. It is not the main reason, but it is a contributory factor. They party until 8am every single day - it is unliveable.

“I was thinking of letting the house but I do not want to do that to myself because they will probably be students who will cause more problems.”

He added: “They have ruined this area completely because there are nice people living here who suffer because of them.”

Chairwoman of the Lenton Drive and Neighbours Residents’ Association Kate Loewenthal hopes the dispersal order will make students “think twice”.

She said: “It might be the case where people want to avoid getting arrested so they will think twice before making noise. I do not know if there is anything that could stop them at this point.

A WOMAN says a hired e-scooter she was riding fell apart as she made her way to catch a tram in Clifton.

Emily Smith, a legal receptionist who lives on the estate, said she was shocked to see the handlebars and steering rack come off at the base of the scooter.

Nottingham is one of three cities where the bright yellow Wind scooters are being trialled, and while they have been a success for the most part, some riders have raised a number of concerns.

Among these concerns are people riding while drunk and scooters being abandoned on pavements, blocking the way of those with disabilities and pushchairs.

Ms Smith, 25, told the Post: “I was just riding on it and felt the handlebars go and that’s when the whole thing broke in half. They are fun but they can be dangerous. “I had to drag it back to the parking space so I didn’t get fined. I was going quite fast when it started to feel something was not right, and I thought I am going to have to park this up.

“I was so annoyed. I do not want people to see this and never ride them, but I think there needs to be more research done into it and make sure they are safe.”

Adults in Nottingham are some of the least likely to know rules surrounding electric scooters, a new poll commissioned by the Major Trauma Group found.

E-scooters are classed as motor vehicles (PLEVS), riders must be over 16, have a full provisional UK licence and must not ride on footpaths.

Helmets are recommended, but not a legal requirement.

A spokesman for Wind added: “The safety of our riders is our main priority.

“As more scooters are being deployed to the streets of Nottingham, we have seen a few isolated incidents of vehicles being left damaged as a result of mishandling.

“We always collect any damaged scooters immediately and have recently deployed additional patrols and maintenance staff to regularly check our vehicles for any damages. We also work with local law enforcement to encounter any misuse of our scooters.”
