Diana in detail

-

TO mark what would have been the 60th birthday of Diana on July 1, this featurelength film documents the life of the Princess of Wales.

From nursery assistant to global superstar, Diana’s death in 1997 aged just 36 inspired global mourning.

There’s plenty of rare archive footage here, with everything from home videos of Diana as a child, through to her in later years.

There is also new testimony as friends and relatives speak out for the first time.

Her first cousin Diana Mcfarlane says: “She was full of life, great fun, loved a giggle. She had a wicked sense of humour. I think we used to think we could get away with something naughty, looking angelic afterwards.”

Diana Mcfarlane, who shared a dorm with her cousin at boarding school, adds: “She loved trashy romantic novels, probably just loved a love story.

“I can tell you that she used to have photographs of Prince Charles by her bed. She had a schoolgirl crush on him for a very long time.”

Princess Diana’s friend Dr James Colthurst also speaks about how they met on a ski holiday and went on to become life-long friends.

He says: “She had a lot of energy about her, a lot of buzz. She was much brighter than people gave her credit for.”

The film moves through Diana’s life as she meets Prince Charles, has William and Harry and goes on to divorce, before covering her final years as she sought happiness away from the royal family.

It’s a well known tale, but one we still can’t get enough of.
