THE family of a Nottingham soldier who died in Afghanistan says it now feels as though he “died in vain” after Taliban forces took over the country.

Kieron Hill died after an explosion in Afghanistan in May 2009 having served in the Armed Forces since he was 16.

Now, 12 years later, Taliban forces have regained control of the troubled country.

Kieron’s stepdad, John Holmes, 54, from Clifton, said: “I’ve been keeping up with it on the news every day. It’s not nice to see.

“All the men, like Kieron, who have lost their life in Afghanistan, it almost feels like it was in vain.

“I don’t think they should send more troops in now. I know the RAF has been helping to rescue civilians and get people back already.

“The whole family is so proud of Kieron. He’s got lots of friends and followers who are just as proud of him too.”

Distressing scenes on Monday, showed Afghans clinging on to military planes leaving Kabul Airport as they attempted to flee the country.

Parliament is being recalled from its summer recess to debate the ongoing situation in the country.

Kieron is not forgotten in the area where he grew up. New apartments being built in Clifton will have a special dedication to Kieron and will be known as Kieron Hill Court.

They are due to be completed next year on the site of the former Southchurch garages, off Hamilton Court.

A tree has also been planted at Farnborough Academy in Farnborough Road in his memory.
