PLANS for a toucan crossing and other safety measures on a dangerous stretch of road have been welcomed by residents.

The crossing will be installed on Watnall Road near the A611 Hucknall bypass.

Councillor Dave Shaw, who represents the Hucknall West ward for the Ashfield Independents, said: “I am pleased that the county council has committed to these works after a campaign led by local residents and ourselves.

“Pedestrians and cyclists told me that the road was an accident waiting to happen.

“People explained that crossing Watnall Road felt like putting your life in someone else’s hands.”

Residents are relieved about the plans.

Ian Haddon, 61, who lives near the bypass, said: “It’s a good idea and dog walkers can use it. It’s very busy around here. People have been run over and killed at the bypass. It’s needed.”

The toucan crossing will incorporate a controlled area indicated by zig-zag markings along the approaches to the crossing within which parking and loading by vehicles will be prohibited at all times.

Another resident, Lisa Talbot 41, who grew up in the area, agreed the roads were very dangerous.

She added: “It’s non-stop traffic and incredibly busy. It’s a good idea as it is hard to get across. It’s absolutely mad.”

The county council has also agreed to carry out speed surveys in Babbacome Way, Common Lane, Nabbs Lane and Salterford Road.

Mother of two Sarah Bray, 45, who lives at Common Lane was concerned for the safety of her kids.

She said: “This corner outside my house, drivers come round very fast. We have got speed bumps but they still go over at speed.

“As a mum, it’ll make me feel better. With two teenagers on bikes, I think it is all a good idea.”
