PEOPLE in Gedling have spoken out about the amount of traffic which builds up on Arnold Lane – and say it is getting worse.

Traffic has increased along the A6211 Arnold Lane, which runs parallel to the Chase Farm housing development.

Residents are hopeful that the new Gedling Access Road, which is expected to open in the next few months, will help to alleviate congestion.

Nick Reeve, 61, a former miner who lives on Shelford Road just off the busy main road, tries to avoid the road at all costs.

He said: “It is a very busy road and trying to get out in the morning is a real pain.

“It’s a really fast road as well, the speed limit is going down to 30mph, which is good.

“I know ways around and do try to take different routes. I really hope the new road will help as traffic is only getting worse.”

Gedling Access Road, which will provide a link between the B684 Mapperley Plains and the A612 Trent Valley Road, is scheduled to open this autumn.

More new homes are expected to be built on the Chase Farm site following the completion of the new £40m access road.

Lydia Adkin, 85, retired, of Eastcliffe Avenue, thinks the traffic on Arnold Lane will subside once the new road is completed.

She said: “Once the access road is open I think it will help the problems with this road.

“It is bound to help traffic flow.

“Eventually, it will be quiet but at the moment it is quite bad.”

Nottinghamshire County Council has reassured residents that the new access road will help traffic flow.

Gary Wood, Head of Highways and Transport at Nottinghamshire County Council, said: “Arnold Lane, between Mapperley Plains and Colwick Loop Road in Gedling, is one of the most heavily used roads in the region, carrying over 15,000 vehicles a day.

“We’re aware that roadworks in the surrounding area have increased the pressure on this road and would like to thank motorists for their patience during this time.

“Once the Gedling Access Road is open, it will provide a safer, less congested and faster route for this through traffic.

“We are also intending to reduce the speed limit on Arnold Lane and introduce a 7.5t Environmental Weight Limit (EWL) on Burton Road, Shearing Hill and Arnold Lane to further ease traffic along these roads.”

Allison Dippencar, 58, of Eastcliffe Avenue, said: “It is really busy at the moment.

“It’s an actual nightmare to try and join as it is constant traffic. The access road will make a difference.”
