Relief on way for ‘disgusting’ road

CALVERTON residents say they “can’t wait” for work to begin on resurfacing a “disgusting” main road.

People living on Park Road East, which is set to benefit from the Nottingham City Council work next month, revealed that the unforgiving surface has caused them issues for years.

“Every time a lorry or bus comes down here it’s just ‘bang bang bang bang’ noise and vibrations,” said Donald Crutchley, who lives on the section of the street near Thorndale Road.

“Especially when the night buses come – it affects my sleep.”

The 72-year-old added: “I can’t wait, it needs doing. I’ve lived here for over 30 years. I originally thought it was supposed to be done in 2018 but we’re still waiting.”

The bumpy road has so far been described as being treated by the street equivalent of plasters, but locals are hoping for something more on the side of reconstructive surgery.

Jackie Allen, who lives on Park Road East, said has been putting up with the problematic road surface for over half a decade.

“It’s about time,” said the 57-year-old sales administrator.

“It’s brilliant that it’s getting done. It affects the car quite a bit.

“I’ve lived here for about 10 years and had to put up with the problem for about five or six years.”

A 43-year-old resident, who preferred not to be named, recalled a time where a van had driven past and flicked stones towards him, narrowly missing his face and scratching his car.

Park Road East will be closed from October 11 to October 19 from 8am to 5pm, affecting nine roads in total.

However, it seemed a price residents were willing to pay.

“I don’t mind the disruption,” said a 73-year-old resident, who wished to remain anonymous.

“Going along this road is like going on a roller coaster – it needs doing.”

“I’ll be away that week,” laughed Mr Crutchley. Another resident, who has lived nearby for some 65 years, and is able to recall a time when it “was all fields”, described the state of the road as “disgusting”.

“When you’re on the bus it’s so bumpy,” said the 83-year-old. “It definitely wants doing, for a main road it’s disgusting.”
