Waterways building plans set to be revealed
BID TO BUILD 95 FLATS ON CANALSIDE
THE proposed transformation of a landmark city waterside building is about to take a big step forward – with plans set to be brought to the table this month.
Developers will soon formally submit proposals for a project to create 95 flats for working professionals Nottingham’s British Waterways Building.
The stunning building – beside Nottingham and Beeston Canal in Castle Wharf – was previously occupied by a gym and a JD Wetherspoon pub after being converted in 1996.
Richard Thomas, development director of H20 Urban – a partnership between the building’s owner the Canal and River Trust and developer Bloc Group – said: “The building has been subject to vacant commercial space in recent years and currently has two tenants.
“Our proposals, therefore, give the building a long-term future and would add more vibrancy by creating a new community in the area.”
Under the scheme, the building’s exterior would be preserved and internal features, including striking spiral staircases, refurbished and retained. An extra floor would be added, in itself housing eight apartments.
The building, formerly known as the Trent Navigation Company warehouse, is Grade II listed.
It was built in around 1919 for storing and loading goods and materials on to canal barges for transportation. More recently, it housed Wetherspoon pub The Company Inn, which has now closed.
A gym has also shut – but The Glee Comedy Club continues to operate from the building.
Mr Thomas added: “We have undertaken a public consultation in which a majority of people supported the scheme.
“We are currently finalising details of the scheme and expect to submit a planning application later this month.
“The proposals mean the whole of the building would be required for residential use.
“We have been in touch with the current commercial occupiers to inform and update them and we will continue to do so to ensure they remain updated on our plans and the progress of our application.”
