Wootton: Our best is yet to come

KYLE Wootton says Notts County have yet to reach the peak of their powers in the National League as he offered his assessment of the season so far.

The Magpies have soared into the National League promotion picture under head coach Ian Burchnall with the club currently seventh in the table.

Notts have won huge praise for their performances this season having produced some swashbuckling displays that has seen them tagged as the best footballing side in the league.

And top scorer Wootton still feels Notts have yet to hit top gear ahead of what is set to be a fascinating second half to the campaign.

Asked for his assessment of the season so far, Wootton said: “It’s good.

“We’re progressing and we know as a squad, there’s more to come.

“We just need to get a bit of consistency in there. We are one of the sides who have played more of the teams at the top end and we’ve done well against the teams at the top.

“I think that shows what we’re all about also.

“We’ve been working on a lot of things and things are starting to come together. As long as everyone keeps fit and the squad is fighting then I’m sure we’ll be up there.”

Notts had been due to play Chesterfield last Tuesday but the game was wiped out due to a Covid event in the Spireites’ squad.

But they are next back in action on

Boxing Day when they make the lengthy trip to King’s Lynn.

Notts will be hoping Wootton can continue his fine form in front of goal that has made him the club’s top scorer with 13 goals this term.

His strike against Altrincham in the FA Trophy last weekend was also his 50th for the club in what is his third season at Meadow Lane.

And reflecting on his achievement, Wootton said: “It does mean a lot especially to do it at this club.

“It’s a great achievement.

“I had it in sight and funny enough I was thinking about it before the game. It’s great to hit 50 but hopefully, there’s many more to come.

“I think you can always have more. I think if you look at my ratio of goals per game it’s not bad at all, really.

“But I’m a person who always wants more. And I think I can get more.

“But again, I’m just doing the job for the team, the manager and what he wants me to do. The goals come with it so it’s great.”
