You’ve got a friend in God

- Jerome Edwards ■■Jerome Edwards is director of Director of charity Matthew 25:40

NAME a characteristic of God.

There are an infinite number of characteristics of God that we could recite. Here are some which I can name: good, kind, love. Of these, we may have been blessed enough to experience, some characteristics we never have and some we wish we did.

The element of God that I really cling to is Friend.

A friend understands what we are going through,

A friend sees that a problem shared is a problem halved, A friend will not betray, And a true friend stays close even through moments where we fail as friends to them.

How wonderful is it to have a steady rock as a Friend, that we can depend on in this age and in the age to come?

My faith in this invisible Friend may not be shared with all that are reading this, and even those that have known this Friend for years understand how key it is to nurture this relationship.

It’s at this point that I would love to say it is easy to nurture relationships with any friend, but I can say for certain this is not always true; unfortunately, moments without a friend are even harder.

Our role in this relationship is to have faith in the things they say they are, such as just, compassionate, faithful, even when that Friend isn’t giving us what we think we need, when we feel need it.

As with all relationships, we have to spend time to nurture and strengthen the relationship. Think of your most intimate people in your life; you both shared highs and lows, you continue to share your inner most thoughts and feelings, laughs and tears. Plus, nobody likes a friend that doesn’t connect.

So, one question stands: how does one connect with a Friend we can’t see or touch?

Reaching out through talking – Prayer.

Understanding their nature and story – Reading the Bible.

Thanking them for all things – Praise.

Bonus: Having inner confidence that our Friend has control over all situations – Being still.

And in that we will have a friend that will be with us through this age, and the age to come.

We aim to model what we learn from that friendship to all people on every Saturday at 11am.
