Residents left frustrated at roadworks delay
ANGER OVER SETBACK TO COUNTY COUNCIL SCHEME
RESIDENTS have been left frustrated by roadworks being put on hold.
Albert Street in Hucknall was set to close for 10 weeks for resurfacing work.
According to the initial plans, the busy carriageway was supposed to be shut between its junctions with High Street and Torkard Way from November 22 until February 6.
But people living on the street said the work never started and complained about the delay.
According to the residents, a letter has been sent out to tell them that the work has now been put back to begin on February 22.
The scheme, being carried out by Via East Midlands on behalf of Nottinghamshire County Council, is to widen a footway and resurface the carriageway.
Shane Barker, a software engineer on Albert Street, said: “Nothing ever gets done around here.
“I suppose it is because of the pandemic, and I understand that it is not easy to work under so much pressure.
“But at the same time – it has been two years now since Covid started.”
The 33-year-old added: “I think it will be very difficult for those who are disabled.
“The residents can use alternative parking so it is not such a big issue – but those with a blue badge who park here to go on the high street will be affected.
“I do not think that the works are urgent, to be honest
– there are worse streets in Nottingham that need resurfacing work.”
Anthony Peel, 37, who also lives on Albert Street, added: “It would be a major time because it will carry on throughout February when the children are back in school.
“I just do not understand why they did not get it done during lockdown.”
He added: “It has been a mess all around.
“It is just a pain because there has been previous work done in the area – and it is quite inconvenient for a lot of people.”
Carer Peter Smith, of Albert Street, suggested that other projects should be prioritised in the area.
The 55-year-old said: “There is a major problem with speeding and parking around here.
“Like most things, the council does not seem to care enough to change something.”
But Gary Wood, head of highways and transport at Nottinghamshire County Council, said: “We will be making improvements to widen the footway and resurface the section of Albert Street, Hucknall, between Torkard Way and the High Street.
“The work was originally planned to take place in November but is now due to begin on February 7 2022 and is expected to last for three weeks.
“Whilst we understand residents may have concerns, we aim to keep disruption to a minimum with pedestrian access to premises maintained at all times. We will also be writing to residents with further information regarding access in the New Year.
“Alternative delivery options are available for business deliveries to the High Street within permitted times.”
