Liquid Light and Mocky-d team up to create city’s first vegan taproom

A NOTTINGHAM vegan food company has announced it will join Liquid Light brewery to create Nottingham’s first vegan taproom experience.

The taproom is based at Unit 9 Alfred Street in Sneinton, just a few minutes from the market.

The popular vegan food business, Mocky-d, has been serving burgers and hotdogs from its distinctive van for five years.

The business is the creation of Ben Lord and Clare Morrissey who make the burgers using their own topsecret recipe.

Their menu has even included limited edition burgers infused with

CBD oil.

They met Thom Stone from Liquid Light at a craft food event when they were both starting out.

As both businesses are vegan, they share a similar ethos which formed the basis for the collaboration.

Ben said: “We started at the same time as Liquid Light and we met at a festival where they were doing the beers while we did the food.

“We are made for each other with our shared love of music, craft and art. We did a weekend event for them when they moved into their Alfred Street location and we knew we wanted to do the food for them all the time. It has finally come to fruition and it’s meant to be.”

The taproom is closed to the public Monday to Wednesday so the team can brew the beers. It opens again on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from late afternoon until 10pm. When it comes to the menu, there will be changes, but Mockyd fans can expect the classics the brand has become known for. The menu will see some exciting new additions including Sunday roasts. “We will be working with their beers so the food complements what they are producing. “On the launch night, there will be a collaboration that we are working on with them, but we aren’t releasing it yet as it’s top secret.

“You will still be able to get our regular menu, but then we will do Sunday roasts too. You can pop down and bring your kids or the dogs to have some food and a pint,” he said. Clare and Ben have just launched Mocky-d clothing with a range of T-shirts available through their Instagram page. “The following was a surprise when we started. All we have done is been truthful and kept our prices as low as we could.

“We make our food ourselves so you don’t have to buy a frozen product. We always explained what we were doing and invite everyone to try it. It’s created this sort of cult which can be daunting at times,” Ben said.

“We are amazed at these beautiful people who turn up. People expect the unexpected with us and I put it down to people seeing the effort we put into our food which is handmade to our own recipe. We treat people as we would like to be treated.”

Their innovative approach to business continued during the lockdown as they created cooking kits for their fans.

Ben highlighted that while this may be Nottingham’s first vegan taproom offering food and beers, it is something that is already happening in other cities like London.

Ben feels Sneinton is developing in a great location, especially for independents.

He said: “It’s lovely to watch how Sneinton is developing. If you’ve lived in Nottingham for quite a while then you saw what it was like in the 90s and you think this place could be great.

“Now it’s starting to get great and we are really pleased. It’s a good place for us to be.”

We are amazed at these beautiful people who turn up. People expect the unexpected with us.
