Time for new laws to regulate all the bikers
WHEN will the police and the councils do something about protecting our nature reserves from cyclists and moto-cross scramblers using them as glorified racing tracks?
While walking in Foxcovert Plantation, north of Arnold, it’s perfectly safe to walk in the early morning, but on our way back we faced the arrogance and ignorance of mountain bike cyclists or motocross riders scrambling over the reserve, of which none had any consideration for other people walking, some with their dogs.
We actually came across a couple of which one was blind with a dog that was blind. What chance would they have had to avoid disrespectful cyclists or riders?
I welcome the new traffic laws for cyclists on our main roads, but some legislation needs to be implemented in law so we can identify the cyclist and their cycle, along with some insurance, as I see regularly cyclists breaking the basic requirements of the Highway Code – from cycling through red traffic lights to mounting the pavement.
We have spent a fortune on socalled “cycle lanes” but to see them being used is as elusive as someone charging their electric car.
Why should it be only the drivers of cars, vans and lorries contributing to the budgets which create and maintain our highways and footpaths, even if it is a small amount which can be administered?
People must remember that not all cyclists have passed a cycling proficiency test and that they can cause damage and accidents, along with remembering that it’s not always the car or lorry driver’s fault
