Pub in prime village location is ‘crying out’ for renovation

OWNERS SAY THEY ARE JUST WAITING FOR THE RIGHT PERSON TO LEASE IT

VILLAGE residents say a pub which has remained derelict for more than two years is “crying out” to be renovated and reopened. The Manvers Arms in Main Road, Radcliffe-ontrent, closed in December 2019 and has remained shut ever since.

The pub was set to receive a major makeover but it was revealed last year that the new licensee had dropped out, meaning reopening plans for autumn 2021 never materialised.

The refurbishment would have included a facelift both outside - where the signs have fallen off - with a new alfresco dining area and inside, with improvements to each of the three bars, a new kitchen and better toilets.

However, with summer approaching, the pub remains fenced off and completely closed to the public. For those who live nearby, there is still real hope that the once hugely popular pub can be brought back to life again.

Jeannette Mortimor, who has lived in Radcliffe-on-trent for the past eight years, said: “It’s very disappointing. It’s in a prime position and was very popular before it closed down - it’s crying out for some trade. We used to go there quite a lot - we even went on Christmas with the family three or four years ago.

“It’s such a shame. I think it’s similar to the Rose and Crown in Cotgrave, it’s disappointing because I think we all had high hopes for it that it would be up and running again.” Marilyn Bonam, who has lived in the village for 10 years, said: “I think it’s a shame because when people come into the village it’s the first thing they see. I would think that they would get people through the door if they were to open. They’ve got a lot of work to do on the exterior, though.”

The pub is owned by Star Pubs & Bars who say they remain committed to reopening the Manvers Arms as quickly as possible and simply need to find the right person to lease it. A spokesperson for Star Pubs & Bars said: “We are keen to reopen the Manvers Arms, Radcliffe on Trent as quickly as possible and have extensive refurbishment plans once we have identified the right person to lease it. “The Manvers Arms is a great business venture and post refurbishment has the potential to become a booming community pub with something for everyone.

The lively bar, updated lounge, and a new patio and pergola, together with an improved coffee and lunch offer, and space for acoustic musicians in the evening will provide plenty of opportunities for locals to unwind and drink and eat with friends. “Anyone interested in running it can find out more at www.starpubs.co.uk or call our recruitment team on 08085 949596.”

It’s a shame because when people come into the village it’s the first thing they see.
