HOMES and an apartment block could be built around a 19-storey tower if plans are approved.

The huge Burrows Court tower in Sneinton would be surrounded by 15 houses and a block of 41 flats, if the project receives the final go-ahead from Nottingham City Council’s planning committee tomorrow.

The development of the land around the 130-flat tower has been recommended for approval at the meeting.

Nine houses facing Windmill Lane would be three storeys high and have three bedrooms, as well as a lounge, kitchen and bathrooms.

Six of the houses would be two storey with two bedrooms, with all houses having one off-street parking space.

The new three-storey block of flats would be built on top of the existing 107-space car park, with twelve being two bed and twentynine being one bed.

Burrows Court was built in 1967, with it being operated by Nottingham City Council to meet housing needs.

In 2005 the building was decommissioned and all tenants were rehoused, as the city council concluded that there was “low demand due to inaccessible location and poor reputation for drug dealing in and around the block”, and it was subsequently sold to a developer.

Planning permission was granted in 2010 for the refreshment of the existing residential tower block and creation of six apartments and eighteen new houses, but this was not implemented.

In 2013, permission was granted for the refurbishment of the Burrows Court tower.

In March, locals told the Post of their surprise when people moved into the long-time empty block late last year following a renovation.

Neighbours said that a “sudden” influx of people, who they claim to be refugees, took place at the end of 2021.

The current application was submitted in 2017 and has been through a number of iterations and some periods of dormancy.

Plans submitted on behalf of developer Landmark Capital Investment had been recommended by planning officers to be approved by councillors at the previous planning committee meeting on Wednesday, April 20.

But the final approval was postponed over a number of issues.
