Cheaper and healthier than your TV repeats

WALKING through Ploughman Wood, on the outskirts of Lambley, whilst out with a fellow walker, we were surprised by the increase in the number of people patronising the local nature reserve, where we may encounter ten people at most at other times.

Although it was a sunny day for May, I as I normally do, as an ingrained gesture from parents, said either good morning or afternoon, according to the time of the day with anyone I meet.

As I exchanged pleasantries with a gentleman and his female companion, I noted their footwear wasn’t suitable for the conditions and terrain of the nature reserve. In a civil manner, I asked if they were enjoying their walk, to which they both said in synchronisation “yes” and that it was a lot less costly than retail therapy, to which we agreed.

They stated that they wished both their children would take up walking, rather buying things destined for the wardrobe or cupboard, never to leave.

They added that they came from a non-brainwashed generation that did not subscribe to high-cost brands or award-winning services, from electronic gadgets to fashion.

I suspect their measures, as with mine, will have a less severe impact when it comes to adjusting our budgets, as I do not subscribe to major brands or awarding-winning products or services, whether it is a loaf of bread or packet of cereals, I do not buy by name but by contents.

As with supermarkets, I want a store that consistently sells its products cheaper all year round, rather than exclusive offers, as running around to find these specific offers defeats the object of being more economic with one’s budget, especially in the current climate of ever-increasing prices and costs, from fuel to food, from heating to cooking.

As I stated to the couple, we have a beautiful county to explore and walk, yet 90 per cent of the people of this county have never seen the beauty spots that Nottinghamshire has to offer – far better than watching constant repeats, or playing on a gamebox!
