Police car rammed by pick-up truck in chase

-

TWO men are in custody after a pick-up truck failed to stop and rammed a Nottinghamshire Police car during a getaway attempt.

The Toyota Hilux, which is believed to have been stolen, was followed on the A6097 in Nottinghamshire on Saturday at around 6.15pm after it was spotted being driven erratically near Lowdham by a police officer in an unmarked car.

The truck continued along the A612 Nottingham Road towards Nottingham, where the driver continued to make several dangerous manoeuvres. The police officer was trained in tactical pursuit and containment, so started up his blue lights and sirens.

A chase began after the truck failed to stop. The vehicle went on to hit speeds of 90mph before almost causing a collision by going through red lights, police said.

About 10 minutes into the chase the truck slowed down before reversing at speed into the unmarked police car, causing significant damage.

Other police vehicles took over the pursuit which continued into Farndon, where the truck finally stopped.

Two men, aged 30 and 33, were detained and taken into custody.

They were then arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, failing to stop, failing to provide a breath and saliva sample, theft of a trailer, assaulting a police officer and criminal damage to a police vehicle with intent to endanger life.

Inspector Abigail Goucher, from Nottinghamshire Police, said: “It was fantastic teamwork by officers to stop the truck and this just goes to serve as a warning to anyone who may think of trying to outrun us.

“Officers are highly trained and, so it won’t be long before we catch up with you. We have arrested two men in connection with the incident and our enquiries continue.”
