THE manager of a waste collection company in Nottingham has spoken out after the business was hit by a “significant fire” in the early hours of Monday.

It comes after eight crews were called to Colson in Bulwell Lane, Old Basford.

Darren Mckenzie, Basford manager at Colson, said he received a call at around 1.30am on Monday to inform him about the fire. Firefighters worked throughout the morning to put out the blaze.

Huge piles of burnt rubbish were spotted on the site. Firefighters also used an aerial ladder platform to tackle the blaze. A large Colson lorry entered the site later in the morning to collect the rubbish destroyed in the fire. Mr Mckenzie said the company will be closed “for at least one day” due to the incident.

He added: “It was not such a big fire. We are governed by the EA so everything we do complies with their rules. It would not have been that big if it was contained straight away, but it spread to our next door neighbour’s waste disposals.

“It affected our business. It closed our company for at least one day.”

The fire crews that were here initially have saved all those businesses to the point where some are back at work already. Chris Ennott

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue service and incident commander for this incident, said: “At its peak we had eight appliances here, along with some specialist appliances like the command support unit and the aerial ladder platform as well. It took a number of hours to get the fire under control.

“It was certainly a significant fire at the outset, there are some businesses round to the side of where the fire was, and the fire crews that were here initially have worked incredibly hard and have saved all those businesses to the point where some of them are back at work already.”

An investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the fire. No one was injured, but crews did save a kitten found in a pile of rubbish.
