‘I feel paranoid living here’

RESIDENTS SPEAK ABOUT THEIR EXPERIENCES OF ‘ROUGH’ AREA FOLLOWING INCIDENT OUTSIDE PUB

PEOPLE in New Basford say they feel “paranoid” after a fight outside a pub.

Residents say they “don’t like” the area – but pointed out that issues of antisocial behaviour were nothing to do with their immediate neighbours.

Their comments came after police attended reports of a fight outside the Horse and Groom, in Radford Road, in the early hours of Sunday.

Two men were injured and four people arrested.

Mother of two Amy Parrish, 30, who has lived in the area for three years, described feeling “paranoid”.

“I really don’t like it here,” she said. “We’ve been trying to move and I feel paranoid living here. It does get rough around here at weekends, that’s for sure.

“I’ve personally not had any problems. But, for example, my partner was asked, when taking the bin out around the back once, by a group of youths ‘what are you doing here’ and we’ve never seen them before.

“It’s all right during the day, but you do see people hanging around outside at night. There is a little community here, though, and the people that actually live around here are lovely. I think people come from outside of the area.”

The incident at the pub was described by Nottinghamshire Police as a “melee”. Two men have been treated in hospital for injuries not believed to be life-threatening or altering. Three men, aged 37, 35 and 31, and a 20-year-old woman, were all arrested on suspicion of affray.

Neighbour Stella Tanase, 44, said: “You do see more people with cars come around here at the weekend. I only ever use my back door to get into my house, never the front.

“There aren’t many problems around here, only usually at the weekends. All the neighbours here are nice and friendly

– they really are nice neighbours.”

But Peter Ellis, 51, who lives in Radford, said: “I come here quite often, and I haven’t seen or known of many disturbances. It is a busy area around here.

“I usually see that it’s a lot busier at weekends. There are more cars around and parking can be more of a problem. I come through here a lot to get things like my car washed or MOT sorted.” Detective Inspector Ashley Xavier said: “This was a particularly chaotic scene and response officers did a great job to calm things down and identify suspects. We are now working to understand exactly what happened and have already reviewed a considerable amount of evidence. “We would also like to speak to any additional witnesses who have not yet come forward – particularly those who may have recorded video footage.” Anyone who can help should call 101, quoting incident 130 of July 31.
