New location is just tailor-made for busy couple

BLACK BUTTERFLY SPREADS ITS WINGS ON DERBY ROAD

A GOOD suit is a good investment that can often see you through the years so it’s always worth finding a tailor you can trust to make those essential nips and tucks where needed.

Not only that, but with a focus on renewable fashion and less waste, a tailor can help you to get a few extra years out of a beloved outfit.

Black Butterfly is a one-stop Nottingham shop for sharp suits and expert alterations.

The shop – which was on Long Row – has now moved to Derby Road, taking over a former art gallery.

The new premises has been painted a chic black, lifted by the light from the huge front window.

Examples of the business’s tailoring line the wall along with a huge colourful display of different threads and plants.

A team of five staff is working hard on alterations in the back.

Derby Road has welcomed quite a few new pubs, shops and businesses in recent times.

Black Butterfly co-owners Milan Georgiev and Yanits Georgieva opened their business eight years ago when they relocated to Nottingham.

“It’s just five minutes outside of the city centre and this is the closest shop with a window like this where you can see the centre,” Milan said.

“People don’t mind walking for five more minutes to see a good tailor.

“We love Derby Road and this is the perfect location for us.

“There are so many restaurants and pubs and we work with Smalley’s Tailoring, which is just up the road.”

“The business has been open for eight years since I came to Nottingham with my wife and it’s been quite successful.

“I started tailoring when I was 16 so I’ve been doing this for 30 years.”

The team at Black Butterfly work with Italian and British cloth, and examples of the suit styles line the newly-painted walls.

They offer a little bit of everything including made-to-measure, suit alterations and even wedding dress alterations. The business is also welcoming to the LGBT+ community, providing tailoring for weddings and suits in a safe space.

In fact, creating clothing for couples on the happiest day of their lives is the most joyful thing for Milan and Yanitz.

Milan said: “Making wedding suits makes us feel proud as people are happy with our work and in our alterations which is priceless to us.”

Finding the right new location for the shop was key.

While Long Row is in the middle of the city centre, it can often be difficult to get customers off the beaten track into different side streets.

“The most difficult part was moving premises along with finding the right location, dealing with landlord and agents,” Milan said.

“That was the most stressful and I’m glad it’s all over so we can open the shop.”

For now, the business is focused on getting the ground floor just right but Milan has plans for the “huge” basement. He is also curious to see if there are any hidden caves as many of the shops and bars have access to the cave system under the road.

“We have a huge basement downstairs and in the future – I would like to transform it into a proper tailoring shop where we can start our own suits made in Italy, we do made-to-measure at the moment but downstairs would be ready-made where people can come and buy straight from us. That’s my dream.”
