Roof terrace for historic city pub given go-ahead

COUNCIL SAYS PLAN HAS ‘ACCEPTABLE IMPACT’ ON GRADE II LISTED BUILDING

ONE of Nottingham’s oldest pubs is set to get a brand-new rooftop feature where pubgoers can socialise and relax.

A fenced-off terrace for drinkers will soon be constructed at the centuriesold Ye Olde Salutation Inn, in Hounds Gate, after Nottingham City Council gave permission for the project on November 11.

There will be an adaption of the existing roof to add a new metal staircase up to the new roof terrace, with a raised floor built over the existing flat roof of the Grade II Listed building.

The property lays claim to being Nottingham’s oldest licensed building, dating back to 1240.

Previous plans for a roof terrace were put forward in 2019, before fresh plans were submitted earlier this year.

The Civic Society had raised concerns regarding the proposal initially due to visibility of the proposed roof terrace from the surrounding area.

As a result, the proposal was amended by reducing the fence height, removing the originally planned festoons and post lights, and reducing the post heights to the fence level.

The area of roof affected by the proposals is located on a modern addition to the listed building and set back from both Maid Marian Way and St Nicholas Street.

Nottingham City Council concluded these changes meant the altered plan would have an “acceptable impact” on the listed building and a low visual impact on the character of the Conservation Area street scene.

In a decision notice, a planning officer added: “In conclusion, the proposed roof terrace is considered to be acceptable subject to the recommended conditions and in the context of this busy city centre location where the ambient noise levels are generally higher.”

During the pandemic, a £30,000 fundraising campaign was launched to save the pub, which has previously survived the plague and wars.

The pub offers real ales, a large wine selection and a food menu, as well as being a popular venue for local rock bands in the city centre.

Planning documents showed the plans hoped to create an “improved external social experience” at the pub.

It also expressed the view that the pub was an important part of the community offering a place for people to socialise and relax in an alternative environment to their home.

A planning document submitted on behalf of Stonegate Group, which runs the pub, added: “The final design proposal has been reached to ensure improved facilities not only for the pub but also for the wider community to ensure that the facility creates a more attractive amenity for the area.

“The proposal is of a design, layout scale and mass compatible with the locality and any neighbouring buildings and spaces to satisfy the terms outlined in the planning advisory documents provided by Nottingham City Council.”

The Post contacted Ye Olde Salutation Inn for comment but had not received a response by the time this edition went to print.
