Joe Baker made football history when he became the first player from outside the Football League to play for England. The Hibernian star scored in the 2-1 win over Northern Ireland at Wembley.
1990:
Fred Daly, the first Irish golfer to win the Open Championship, died at the age of 79. The former Ryder Cup player won at Hoylake in 1947.

Britain’s Lennox Lewis regained the WBC, IBF and IBO heavyweight titles with a fourthround knockout of Hasim Rahman in Las Vegas.

Roy Keane left Manchester United after 12-and-a-half years at the club.
