Joe Baker made football history when he became the first player from outside the Football League to play for England. The Hibernian star scored in the 2-1 win over Northern Ireland at Wembley.

1990:

Fred Daly, the first Irish golfer to win the Open Championsh­ip, died at the age of 79. The former Ryder Cup player won at Hoylake in 1947.

2001:

Britain’s Lennox Lewis regained the WBC, IBF and IBO heavyweigh­t titles with a fourthroun­d knockout of Hasim Rahman in Las Vegas.

2005:

Roy Keane left Manchester United after 12-and-a-half years at the club.

2010:

FIFA executive committee members Amos Adamu and Reynald Temarii were banned from taking part in any kind of football-related activity for three years and one year respective­ly in relation to allegation­s of corruption over World Cup votes.

2013:

Former British number one Elena Baltacha announced her retirement from tennis. She died of liver cancer in May 2014 at the age of 30.

New Zealand rugby union player Jonah Lomu died at the age of 40.
