ASHFIELD’S MP is calling on the leader of Ashfield District Council to step down.

It comes after the arrest of a number of Ashfield Independent councillors last Wednesday.

MP Lee Anderson is requesting Councillor Jason Zadrozny to remove himself from his leadership role.

Property searches were conducted as part of an ongoing investigation into allegations of fraud, with warrants being carried out simultaneously at addresses in Sutton-in-ashfield, Kirkby-in-ashfield, Underwood, and Stanton Hill.

Of those arrested, three were quizzed on suspicion of fraud and electoral offences, and others were questioned on suspicion of fraud, money laundering and misconduct in public office.

In a letter to Mr Zadrozny, Mr Anderson states: “It is with great sadness that I must write this letter, but recent events leave me with no choice.”

The Ashfield MP goes on to talk about the accusations and alleged crimes committed by councillors, before stating “you should now step aside from your duties as council leader until the investigation has been completed”.

Mr Anderson ends the letter by stating: “I would appreciate a meeting at your earliest convenience” and refers to discussing the handing over of responsibilities.

The six individuals who were arrested have been released whilst the investigation continues.

Speaking previously, an Ashfield District Council spokesperson said: “The arrests yesterday of a number of Ashfield Independent councillors is an ongoing police matter and the council should not and will not comment further at this time.”
