Abolishing the Lords is long overdue

-

NEWS that Keir Starmer intends to include the abolition of the House of Lords in its present form in the next Labour Party manifesto is a decision that will be welcomed, not only by his own party but by many others as well, I believe.

For many years it has been the subject of ridicule and of having no place in a truly democratic system of government in the 21st century.

Recent events, whereby our disgraced ex-prime minister, Boris Johnson, is entitled to bolster its numbers with even more Conservative benefactors and cronies, a 30-year old adviser and an even younger female from his Downing Steet staff, not to mention his biggest fan, Nadine Dorries, provides even more evidence of the laughing stock it has become.

Add to that list the name of an existing peer, Evegny Lebedev, the Russian son of a former KGB agent, appointed by the same, shameless PM, for his philanthropy and services to media. Crazy!

Then we have Liz Truss, the disaster of a Prime Minister who lasted only weeks before being ousted by her own party, having cost the country billions and yet is now afforded the honour of choosing her own Tory favourites to add to the throng.

Farcical! It would be funny if it wasn’t so serious.
