Lewandowski’s pen pain

-

ROBERT Lewandowski – one of the best strikers in the world – suffered penalty woe as Poland and Mexico battled out a goalless draw.

The Barcelona forward still hasn’t scored at a major tournament as his tame effort was saved by Mexico’s veteran goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa.

In what was a dull first half, Mexico’s Alexis Vega headed wide and the only real effort on target came from Jorge Sanchez as his shot was saved by Wojciech Szczesny.

The Poland keeper was in action again when Hirving Lozano’s curling effort was fired straight to him.

The game came to life in the second half when Poland were awarded a spot kick.

Lewandowski was brought down in the box by Hector Moreno and, after being told to review the incident by VAR, referee Chris Beath awarded a penalty.

With the largely Mexican crowd on his side, the 37-year-old Ochoa dived the right way to keep out the spot kick.

The draw gives Argentina extra hope following their shock defeat by Saudi Arabia in the same group.

Poland now face Saudi Arabia on Saturday, while Mexico take on Argentina later that evening.
