Man arrested on suspicion of being unfit to drive and assaulting officer

-

A MAN has been arrested after a car reportedly crashed into a barrier and a Nottinghamshire Police officer was assaulted.

Officers became aware of a collision shortly after 5pm on Wednesday, when a car hit a central reservation.

Enquiries led the officers to Gin Close Way, Awsworth, where they found a suspect.

The force said a man became agitated and started to push and punch the officers, trapping one of their hands in an attempt to avoid arrest.

Following a search a weapon was recovered.

A 53-year-old-man was arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker, possession of an offensive weapon in a public place and driving while unfit through drink or drugs.

Sergeant Paul Crofts, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Our investigations into these incidents remain ongoing.

Thankfully no-one was injured in the collision and the officer received no serious or lasting damage as a result, but as we often reiterate, being assaulted will never be tolerated and we will always endeavour to take robust action.

“Our officers put on their uniform each day in order to protect the public and keep communities safe – being assaulted is not and never will be part of their job description.”

Anyone with any information about the incident is asked to call 101, quoting incident number 558 of November 23. Alternatively, Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111.
