Trees make world greener and healthier

-

NATIONAL Tree Week started last Saturday, marking the beginning of another crucial planting season, giving all of us an opportunity to reflect upon the importance of trees. Lucky as I have been to have had woodland and forest virtually on the doorstep where I was born!

As a youngster, climbing trees was one of many physical activities I enjoyed close to where I lived.

For the first 15 years of my life, a row of trees lined the side of the Daybrook Brook, and not until we had climbed each one could we be recognised as one of “the gang”.

My walkabout excursion yesterday took me to the recreation ground at the bottom of Somersby Road, Woodthorpe, where I found that tree saplings had been planted around the outer edge of the ground, adding to those already established from an earlier date of planting.

This year I have initiated the planting of new fruit trees at two local schools, providing an exciting moment for both the young children and teachers alike.

A £20m boost from the current Government provides a terrific opportunity in establishing more new woodlands, while turning our localities greener and healthier.
