Destination Now Nowhere

-

Remember when we built the ships Which ruled the oceans wide? Remember when we fed the world From fruits of our countryside? Remember when we sank the mines To fuel the nation’s light, The steel mills and the foundries

Constant blazing day and night?

Remember when King Cotton ruled And textiles clothed the land? The monsters of past industry Which derelict now stand? Remember when we fished the deep

And bridged the widest span? Remember wealth and profit From these memories which ran?

That’s all that we remember now, The way we used to be, And our kingdom is an island Which is sadly all at sea. We think that we’ll be great again As back through years gone by, Yet waging our aggressions Isn’t where our future lies.

Yet have we any future now

In this chasm of despair? Are we drifting ever aimless Destination now nowhere? Yes, Britain was a fabled land, The greatest ever seen; How few the years now passing by We forget where we have been.
