College professor Jack Gladney (Adam Driver) passionately teaches Hitler Studies alongside American Studies expert Murray Siskind (Don Cheadle) in a leafy 1980s town. Jack lives with his wife Babette (Greta Gerwig). They have been married before and have three children Denise (Raffey Cassidy), Heinrich (Sam Nivola) and Steffie (May Nivola) from previous relationships as well as a baby together called Wilder.
When the driver of a chemical tanker collides with a train on the outskirts of town, officials order an immediate evacuation to minimise casualties from the “airborne toxic event”.
Jack and his ragtag clan bundle into the family’s station wagon and become snarled in a massive traffic jam as a poisonous, dark cloud hovers on the horizon.
