STAFF at a Nottingham bar couldn’t believe their luck when a customer left them a £1,000 tip.

The customer, whose identify hasn’t been revealed, made the generous gesture at Raglan Road Irish Bar in Derby Road.

The man, not a regular, had been watching the England vs Wales World Cup game in the pub over a few pints of for huge Guinness. his tip £27.80 to the When bill round, to it was the he amazement time added to pay the of the students behind the bar.

Alana John-lewis, 21, said: “As a student I was over the moon with that. With Christmas coming up it’s amaz- ing. It made our day. He can pop in any time of day.

“When he said he’d like to leave a £1,000 tip all of our faces just dropped because we normally get one or two pounds, not £1,000.” The four female students on shift split the unexpected windfall four ways. “At first I couldn’t take it seriously. I put it on the card machine and I just thought, no way. When he went to pay with Apple Pay, I thought it’s fake, you’re joking, and then it went through and he said ‘have a good Christmas, girls,’ added Alana, who is in the final year of a sport and exercise science degree at Nottingham Trent University.

Alana, who has worked at the bar for just under a year, wasn’t due to be working that night but had swapped her shift to cover for a barman who wanted to watch the match.

“One of the boys who works at the Raglan asked me to cover that night. I said ‘absolutely, I don’t mind working the England game’ and he was there so he heard the guy say a £1,000 tip and I think his mouth dropped, too. I bet he wish he’d worked now.”

She plans to spend the money on Christmas presents. “It’s very overwhelming. It will definitely help me out with presents this year.”

Bar manager Ruth Beraki said: “A customer, who has many businesses in Nottingham, said he had a great night and wanted to tip the girls behind the bar. He asked me ‘do they get to keep their own tips?’. I said yes and he said ‘put £1,000 and split it between the four girls.’ They were so happy as they’re all students. It will make their Christmas as they are always skint.”

Staff thought no-one would believe it, so they asked the customer if they could screenshot the transaction on his phone as proof, and the man willingly obliged. The pub is a favourite with Nottingham Forest players and is the one with a picture of Russian President Vladamir Putin on the urinals – previously Donald Trump had that dubious honour.
