ITALIAN BROTHERS SHARE SUCCESS SECRETS OF NOTTS COFFEE IMPORTING BUSINESS

NOTHING beats the taste of the first cup of coffee in the morning.

However, when it comes down to how to make it, coffee fans can be really serious about getting the best beans or finding the perfect blend.

A Nottingham-based company has become the go-to place for coffee connoisseurs looking for the perfect cup.

Bonincontro on Foresters Street in Netherfield not only imports the best in Italian roasted coffee but is expert in machine refurbishment.

Owner Ivan Bonincontro, who is now based in Sneinton, moved to Nottingham from Sicily in 2014 before starting the business in October last year. He started the business with his brother Salvatore and the brothers have a long history of working in the coffee industry.

They know a thing or two about how to make an espresso which Ivan explains has 145 different steps to getting it right. He explained: “There are 145 different procedures to make the perfect espresso including getting the water pressure right, the temperature – even where the coffee comes from.

“If you change the setting on the grinder, for example, it can change the taste of the coffee which can change the acidity or give more or less body to the coffee. You can balance it out how you want your coffee. I can let the customer try the same coffee ten different ways.”

Ivan had a dream of setting up his own business having worked in the coffee industry for such a long time. He decided to take a chance on opening when he relocated to England.

The coffee the company imports comes from Africa, India, Brazil and Ethiopia but is roasted and prepared in Italy.

“We’ve been working for around seven years in the coffee business where we refurbished machines to bring them back to life again. We also import Italian coffee and have lots of experience in this. In our first year, we’ve welcomed 100 customers which is a lot for this business,” he said.

“All of our coffee is premium quality and it comes from Italy near Venice. It’s not made in a big roastery but a smaller one that is more focused on artisan coffee. The small roasters check every bean that goes into the coffee so they need a machine to do that but it means they only select the best.”

Ivan takes pride in being able to refurbish coffee machines back to the best possible quality. By refurbishing and fixing the machines, he believes that it is kinder to the environment.

“We do a full disband of the machine to bring it back to life again. Once we do a full service and complete refurbishment then it looks like a brand new machine.

“With the environment and pollution, we are really proud that we can do this small thing and it has an impact,” he explained.

The secret to the success of the business lies in the personal touch that the brothers bring to the customer experience. Not only that but the passion they share for excellent coffee. “We are passionate about our business so sometimes we charge the customer less which means we don’t always make a profit. We just want it to be perfect.

“Our plan for the future is to be one of the best suppliers in the UK and create a nice environment here,” Ivan said.
