Family feud ends with brother being driven into

A FAMILY feud ended with a brother being deliberately driven into and knocked over by a Land Rover in the street.

Shocking mobile phone footage played at nottingham crown court showed the 4x4 being driven by Jonjoe Askew-harris mount the pavement, strike a car and then the victim followed by a scream from a neighbour who witnessed it.

Moments earlier the 26-year-old father-of-one, who was 24 at the time, had pulled alongside another car being driven by a different family member and threatened him with a metal bar. now he has two years to keep out of trouble or risk being sent to custody for the first time in his life.

Handing him a suspended sentence order, Judge Mark Watson said: “Whatever happened on February 28, 2022, this was not your argument. Probably out of loyalty to your friend you became carried away in the commotion which resulted from what he had against his other family members.

“You became threatening and agitated towards (one man) shouting at him, pulling alongside his car and brandishing some sort of metal pole and threatening him with it. You then drove off, turned around and drove at his car, hitting it and (another other family member). A vehicle can be a highly-dangerous weapon when used in a particular way.”

Dan Scothern, prosecuting, said the incident took place in Denman close, Retford, on February 28, 2022. He said a female family member had “fallen out with her mother” and was in the process of moving her things out of the home when other family members, including one of her brothers – a friend of the defendant’s – arrived in the Land Rover being driven by Askew-harris.

The prosecutor played the footage which showed men shouting and following each other up the street before the Land Rover was turned around, an engine could be heard revving and the vehicle accelerated at a second brother knocking him to the ground. Mr Scothern said: “This all took place in the midst of a family feud and the victim suffered injured knees, cuts and bruises.” Askew-harris, of narrow Lane, Bawtry, near Doncaster, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm; careless driving and affray. He has one previous conviction from 2022 for attempted theft.

Lucky Thandi, mitigating, said in the two years since the incident her client had kept out of trouble and had become a father. She said: “There is no real explanation how he came to be involved save for loyalty to his friend at that particular time.”

Judge Watson handed the defendant a 20-month jail term, suspended for two years, with 200 hours’ unpaid work and 20 rehabilitation sessions. He also endorsed his driving licence with nine penalty points. The brother who was in the Land Rover with him was acquitted of the charges he faced following a trial.
