NOTTINGHAM will be awash with green when the city’s St Patrick’s Day celebrations mark the event’s 25th anniversary.

And this year there will be twice the fun over the weekend of March 16 and 17.

The annual event honours the patron saint of Ireland through religion, music, dancing, and, of course, dressing up and drinking Guinness. Mass and the blessing of shamrock will take place at St Barnabas’ Cathedral, in Derby Road, with the Bishop of Nottingham, the Rt Rev Patrick Mckinney presiding, on Saturday, March 16, at 10am.

A full day of song and dance will take place in Slab Square on the Sunday on the Elaine Marren Memorial Stage – named after one of the founding members of the Nottingham St Patrick’s Day committee, who died in 2018.

Canalside destination Binks Yard will be hosting its first St Patrick’s Day event, headlined by a U2 tribute band.

The family-friendly get-together will take place on the Sunday from noon until 7pm, on the venue’s newlyimproved outdoor terrace. The day-tonight party will kick off in the afternoon with a host of tunes from Irish artists and popular classics, spun by Binks Yard’s in-house DJ Dan James.

Nottinghamshire-born singer songwriter Georgie will support internationally-known U2 cover band U2UK, who will take to the stage at 5pm, performing songs from the legendary band’s 40-year discography. Thanks to Binks Yard’s brand new all-weather stretch cover, revellers can celebrate in style, come rain or shine.

Ben Hicklin, head of events at Binks Yard, said: “St Patrick’s Day is hugely popular in Nottingham, and we’re excited to be launching an event that will be accessible and fun for all the family. As spring arrives, it’s time for our outdoor terrace to shine, providing us with plenty of opportunities to offer exciting parties such as this – especially with our newly installed cover which allows guests to enjoy the outdoor terrace to the fullest, no matter the weather.

“Our street food cube will also be on hand to serve up a selection of tasty treats for all to enjoy, with plenty of Guinness and a wide selection of drinks also available all day.”

Tickets priced £5 can be bought from the Binks Yard website.

The event forms part of a weekendlong extravaganza at the canalside destination at the Island Quarter, off London Road.

On the Saturday, Live Republic will also be hosting an 18+ St Patrick’s Day carnival at Binks Yard, from 2pm to 10pm, with a line-up of Irish bands, DJS and Irish dancers. Tickets priced £20.05 are on sale via the website.

As always the Guinness will be flowing at Nottingham’s Irish bar Raglan Road, in Derby Road, where Richie Muir will be performing from his Celtic Songbook on March 17 from 1pm to 3pm.
