Two butchers and a chippy take home pie awards

-

TWO Nottinghamshire-based pie makers and a fish and chip shop chain have triumphed at this year’s British Pie Awards.

AE Chambers, Bowring Butchers and the Cod’s Scallops all won awards at the annual event.

Family-run butchers AE Chambers, situated in Front Street, Arnold, took the top prize in the Pork Pie category. The business was established in 1889 and is famous for its homemade pies.

Similarly, Mansfieldbased Bowring Butchers is run by fifth-generation farmers who breed quality cattle to produce high-quality meat and tasty farm-to-fork pies.

It took home the gong in “Chicken with Other Meat Pie” class with its chicken, leek and ham hock pie.

The Cod’s Scallops, which has four fish and chip shops in Nottinghamshire, was also victorious in the “Fish and Chip Shop” category with its award-winning cheesy potato and onion pie.

It comprises a shortcrust pie case filled with mature farmhouse Cheddar, roast onions, succulent potato and a hint of coarse-grain mustard.

Matthew O’callaghan, chairman of the Mowbray Pork Pie Association and host of the British Pie Awards, said: “This year’s awards have seen a wonderful celebration of the nation’s love of pies; the atmosphere has been amazing and the level of creativity is off the scale.

“On Wednesday we got to try the phenomenal pie entries, and AE Chambers, Bowring Butchers and The Cod’s Scallops triumphed over incredibly tough competition in the respective categories. These awards celebrate the skill and ingenuity of British pie makers across the UK, and I’d like to congratulate them as a worthy winner.”
