1885: Malcolm Campbell was born. He became the first man to build a machine specifical­ly to set new land and water speed records and was the first to travel at more than 300mph on land. His son Donald would later adapt the craft, which was called Bluebird. Campbell Sr died in December 1948.

1928: Louise Brough was born. The American tennis player won 35 grand slam titles, including the singles at Wimbledon four times between 1948 and 1955. She died in February 2014.

1990: At 13 years and 347 days old, Jennifer Capriati reached the final of the Virginia Slims in Florida, the youngest player ever to do so in a profession­al tournament.

1990: Seve Ballestero­s won his 60th European Tour event, the Balearic Open at Son Vida.

2005: Kevin Keegan parted company with Manchester City, with Stuart Pearce taking over as manager.

2006: Rangers confirmed Frenchman Paul Le Guen had agreed a three-year deal to take over as manager at Ibrox from the end of the season.

2014: Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew was handed a seven-match suspension for his head-butt on Hull City player David Meyler.

2016: Newcastle United sacked Steve Mcclaren and appointed Rafael Benitez as the club’s new manager on a three-year deal.

2018: Tiger Woods finished second to Paul Casey at the Valspar Championsh­ip – his best finish on the PGA Tour since 2013 – as his return from injury continued to gather pace.

2020: The NBA suspended the 2019-20 basketball season after Utah Jazz centre Rudy Gobert tested positive for coronaviru­s.
