NUH appoints new medical director

-

THE trust which runs Nottingham’s hospitals has recruited a new medical director.

Dr Manjeet Shehmar will join Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH) in July, moving from her role as chief medical officer at Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust.

Anthony May, chief executive at NUH, which operates the Queen’s Medical Centre and City Hospital, said he was “delighted” by the appointment.

“She is an experienced medical professional with a clear passion and commitment to make improvements for our patients and our staff,” he said.

Dr Shehmar, a consultant in obstetrics and gynaecology, said: “Everyone was so friendly and welcoming at NUH and I am excited to be part of a clinically led organisation with highly accomplished and dedicated staff. I am honoured and look forward to working with the team towards a caring and ambitious future for our patients.”

Dr Shehmar will replace Dr Keith Girling, who announced his retirement after seven years in the role. His decision was met with criticism by families affected by maternity failings.

Bereaved parents, who are part of the biggest maternity review in NHS history, previously said they were “disappointed and deeply frustrated”.

Dr Jack Hawkins and Sarah Hawkins, whose daughter Harriet died due to failings in 2016, said Mr Girling failed to properly listen to them despite meeting and sending letters. They said there needed to be an “urgent investigation” into whether Dr Girling and the wider trust at the time should have done more to improve maternity care earlier.

In response to the concerns, Mr May previously said he was committed to act on all matters raised by the maternity review.
