City council to introduce £35 charge for garden waste bin

-

A NEW charge is being implemented in Nottingham for garden waste bins, bringing the city in line with most others across England.

Residents receiving the service from the city council will need to opt in online and pay an annual fee of £35. There will be a discount for any additional garden bins at a property, and households receiving Council Tax benefit can get the service for £17.50.

Garden waste collections will begin on Saturday, March 31, and will be collected on the same day as recycling bins.

Councillor Coral Jenkins, portfolio holder for energy, environment and waste services at Nottingham City Council, said: “Most local authorities across England charge for garden waste collections, including all of our neighbouring councils. Our wastecollection budget has had significant pressures placed on it over the past few years and we took the decision to switch to this subscription-based system, which means that only residents who use the service pay for it, providing better value for taxpayers.”

Residents who do not already have a garden waste bin will also need to pay an additional one-off cost of £25 for delivery. The collection service will run from April to November, with fortnightly collections taking place until September, and then monthly collections in October and November.

Residents who subscribe to the service will receive a permit sticker to put on their garden waste bin. Residents who do not want to sign up for the collection service can still take their garden waste to a tip for free.
