Nine tips could close as part of ‘supersites’ plan

CALL FOR COUNTY COUNCIL TO PUBLISH ITS RECYCLING REVIEW

DOCUMENTS have revealed which Nottinghamshire tips could end up closing in the coming years amid plans for new “supersites” to replace those closed down.

Household waste recycling centres in West Bridgford, Kirkby and Bilsthorpe are among those that Nottinghamshire County Council could shut.

The authority first carried out an independent review of its recycling centres in 2022 and a group at the council then went through a series of scenarios for the future of Nottinghamshire’s tips.

The council has said that “commercial sensitivity issues” mean it cannot be more specific about plans at this stage, but a presentation by the authority now shows which tips could go.

The first scenario would only keep four of the 12 current tips, with the Beeston, Calverton, Newark and Warsop sites being retained. To offset the eight closures, this scenario would see three new “supersites” being created.

The second plan would see even further closures, with only the Calverton, Newark and Giltbrook sites being kept open. Three new “supersites” would again be created to offset the closures.

Finally, the third scenario would only see Kirkby, Bilsthorpe and West Bridgford’s tips being closed. A new site would be created to offset the West Bridgford closure.

Final decisions are not likely for another few months as the council faces calls to reveal the outcome of the original 2022 review into its recycling centres.

Councillor Jason Zadrozny, leader of the Independent Alliance opposition group, said: “Nottinghamshire County Council claims to be transparent but refuses to reveal the outcome of the independent strategic review of recycling centres completed in 2022 – hiding behind commercial sensitives.

“This report was done at considerable cost to the taxpayer. The results are in the public interest and needs to be published immediately.

“Make no mistake, the Conservatives, who run the county council, are hellbent on shutting some of the smaller recycling centres like the ones in Beeston, Giltbrook, Mansfield and Kirkby-in-ashfield and the Independent Alliance opposition group will fight them all the way.”

Responding to the Independent Alliance’s call for the results of the review to be published, a Nottinghamshire County County official said that the cabinet member for transport now needed to consider initial recommendations about the future of tips.

A response is then due to be provided back to cabinet in early June, with the likely outcome being that the cabinet will ask for “further detailed work to inform the final design of the future network.”

A further decision from Nottinghamshire County Council’s cabinet would then be needed before the work is finalised, with the council official adding: “It naturally follows that we are therefore unable at the moment to give undertakings regarding the impact on the sites that comprise the current county network.”
