‘I can’t stand living here any more’ says resident after stabbing in street

POLICE DESCENDED ON HOME AND MAN WAS TAKEN TO HOSPITAL

RESIDENTS of a street in Bilborough have spoken out after a man was stabbed.

Police descended on Earls Close at around 9.10pm on Sunday, and a man was taken to hospital.

His injuries were not life-threatening or life-altering and he was later discharged. The incident was described as isolated, taking place inside a home, and police said there was no wider risk to the public.

But some people living nearby say that crime is “getting worse”.

One resident, who has lived on nearby Brindley Road for 24 years, said: “I’d come out for a cigarette and there were police cars everywhere, a critical care van, a small ambulance and a normal ambulance. I just saw it all and thought that’s got nothing to do with me.

“It’s just getting worse, wherever you are. I can’t stand living here any more. My daughter said she hates driving up here.”

Another Brindley Close resident, Selwyn Seymour, said: “There were lots of people at the corner of Earls Close and an ambulance as well. I saw the flashing lights through the window and thought ‘what’s going on there?’ It was dark – 8pm-ish. There were three police cars and they were there for quite a while.”

Jane Ackerley has lived on Earls Close for 17 years. She had returned from a trip out when she arrived back to find police on the street at around 11pm.

She said: “I asked the police what was happening in my area. They said there had ‘not been a good thing’ but that was all.

“I can tell you about most of my neighbours. In summer their kids all come and play about. But that house (where the incident allegedly occurred), we don’t know them. They’ve lived there a few years but we have no idea. When people don’t even want to know who you are you become sceptical.

“I don’t even know whether they are still there or not after what happened. Most of us are very peaceful people here. Most of our neighbours are very good. Some of us have children the same age. This is a family place.”

Detective Constable Michael Love, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Officers attended an address in Earls Close, Bilborough, after receiving reports a man had sustained stab wounds.

“The man was taken to hospital with injuries that aren’t believed to be life-threatening or life-altering following the incident which was reported to police at 9.10pm. He was subsequently discharged.

“Our enquiries are ongoing to locate the suspect and to understand the full circumstances of the situation. I would like to reassure members of the public that we are treating this as an isolated incident, and we do not believe there is any wider risk to the public.

“Anyone with information which could help police with their inquiries is asked to call Nottinghamshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 628 of April 7, or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
